About Our Masters Swimming Program

Skagit Valley Masters Swimmers come in all shapes, sizes, ages (18 & over), and ability levels. Some swim strictly for fitness, some to improve their strokes, some for triathlons, and still others train for pool and open water competitions. The threads we have in common are love of the water and the camaradarie that comes from exercising with fellow swimmers. Not only do we have fun in the water, we also enjoy getting together socially at potlucks and other social events. We swim at the Skagit Valley YMCA in Mount Vernon. Come check us out at one of our weekly practices and meet your friendly future workout buddies!

Head Coach Shannon Singer

Shannon started swimming at the Skagit Valley YMCA in 2003. At that time, there was no organized Masters program, but some fellow swimmers (now teammates) would occasionally enter meets and finally coerced her into trying one. From that point on, she was hooked. After attending a Central Oregon Masters Aquatics (COMA) meet and seeing just what a group of dedicated swimmers could do with some leadership, she decided to attempt to spark some interest up here in the Skagit Valley. The group has grown from 5 in 2004 to over 100 in 2014. In addition to coaching SVMS, Shannon gives regular clinics, teaches private lessons. Shannon was the assistant coach at Short Course Yards (SCY) Nationals for the 2009 and 2014 PNA teams, and the head coach for the 2010 and 2011 PNA teams. She received the PNA Coach of the Year award in 2010. She is a USMS level 3 and an ASCA level 2 coach.

Assistant Coach Kerry Ness

Kerry is also a YMCA lifeguard, and is usually on duty for our Monday evening and Saturday morning workouts. He has recently made huge strides in his swimming, including a 6:45 500 free at the Bainbridge Island meet in October. Kerry is an ASCA level 2 coach.

Assistant Coach Chris Foster

Chris is a reformed triathlete, veteran of 3 Ironman and a multitude of other triathlons. In his "spare" time, he's a firefighter for fire districts 6 and 12. Chris is a USMS level 2 coach. Ask him about his pink fuzzy balls!
